Some words, like 'kutsu', 'kuchi' and 'ashita', probably sound strange to you, because you can't hear 'u' in 'kutsu' or 'i' in 'ashita'. That is because the vowel sounds of 'ki', 'ku', 'shi', 'su', 'chi', 'tsu', 'hi' and 'fu' are unvoiced when they come before syllables from the K, S, T and H rows in the chart (ka, ki, ku, ke, ko; sa, shi, su, se, so; ta, chi, tsu, te, to; ha, hi, fu, he, ho). But you don't have to learn this by heart, you'll pick it up as soon as you start practicing reading
